Getting to Know Cacao

Roots & Origins

Cacao has a documented history spanning over three millennia in Mesoamerica, where ancient civilizations revered it as a sacred crop known as "the food of the gods." The plant held profound ceremonial significance, symbolically linked to human sacrifice and the afterlife, while also marking major life events and serving extensive medicinal purposes, as documented in 16th-century manuscripts.

What is Criollo?

Criollo represents the oldest and most exclusive lineage of cacao. When people speak of ceremonial cacao, it's almost always Criollo they mean. The Maya and Aztecs cultivated it for its rare, ivory-white beans, prized for their natural sweetness and lack of harsh bitterness. Ancient healers also valued its rich concentration of theobromine, a gentle stimulant traditionally believed to open the heart and sharpen spiritual awareness.

Good to know

Raw cacao is minimally processed, so it keeps more of its natural caffeine and theobromine than regular chocolate — part of what gives it that gentle lift, with a small amount of tyramine too (worth knowing if you're on MAOI-type antidepressants). Best enjoyed in moderation if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine.

About

Made by hand,
with love.

I started Heart Cacao because I fell for what a simple cup of raw cacao can do to a morning. Now I melt raw criollo cacao from the Dominican Republic with coconut oil and spices, then pour it by hand into small hearts — each one about 15 grams, a single cup whenever you want it.

I use criollo, the oldest and rarest cacao variety, and the one traditionally used for ceremonial cacao — soft and rounded, without the bitterness you get from most cacao.
